Speech Therapy for Homeschool Families

If you homeschool and your child needs speech therapy, you have probably discovered that the usual route does not apply to you. There is no school SLP pulling your child from class, no IEP meeting, and no district evaluation queue. Whether that feels like freedom or like being on your own depends on the day.

The practical answer for most Arizona homeschool families is private therapy funded through ESA. Here is how that actually works.

ESA almost certainly covers this

Arizona's Empowerment Scholarship Account program was expanded in 2022 so that every K–12 student in the state is eligible. Lifelong homeschoolers qualify — your child does not need to have been enrolled in public school first, which is the assumption that trips people up.

Speech-language therapy from a licensed SLP is an approved category, and so is the comprehensive evaluation that comes first.

Daytime scheduling — the quiet advantage

Almost every school-enrolled family wants the same three appointment slots: after school, before dinner, before everyone falls apart. Those slots are scarce and they are the worst time of day for a tired child to do hard cognitive work.

Homeschool families are not locked into that. A mid-morning session catches a child at their sharpest, fits around your existing rhythm, and means therapy is not one more thing bolted onto an already long day. In practice, homeschooled children often make faster progress for exactly this reason — not because the therapy differs, but because they show up to it awake.

You are already the one teaching

Speech therapy works when the strategies carry into the rest of the week, which is why parent involvement matters so much and why so much of it gets lost when a child is pulled out of a classroom by a therapist the parent never meets.

You do not have that problem. You are in the room, you know exactly what your child is working on, and you can fold it into reading, writing, and conversation across the whole week. That is a genuine structural advantage over the pull-out model, and we build sessions around it — you will leave each one knowing what to do next.

Documentation for ESA

ESA reimbursement generally requires documentation of the provider's credentials and of your child's need. You will receive a written evaluation report and itemized invoices suitable for submission. We would rather hand you the paperwork than have you chase it.
